Members of Woodmen Life Chapter 54 Establish Scholarship
A generous gift to the LSUS Foundation will provide new scholarship to eligible Northwest Louisiana students.
Members of Woodmen Life Chapter 54 are donating $100,000 to endow a scholarship. Woodman Life is a private, nonprofit insurance company that sponsors local, statewide and national community service programs, including scholarships.
“There are around 500 members in this area,” said Elizabeth Jordan, of Shreveport, the Chapter 54 secretary. “It’s not just insurance. There’s a fraternal side to it. A part of the annual dues goes into a fund that we use to do community service.”
It’s the first time Chapter 54 has endowed a scholarship, but Jordan noted that other chapters in Louisiana, including one based in Natchitoches, have set up scholarship funds. Jordan said the chapter also wants to provide vocational and technical scholarships in the future.
She recalls how much scholarships helped her daughters – now grown – when they were in college.
“In everybody’s life, at one time or another, there’s a need for a scholarship,” Jordan said.
The scholarships will be available starting in 2019. Preference will be given to a Woodman Life member or the child or grandchild or a Woodman Life member. The Woodman Life Chapter will confirm this information before awarding the scholarships.
Students must also must:
· Be from Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, DeSoto, Red River, Sabine or Webster parishes.
· Be a sophomore, junior or senior.
· Maintain a 3.0 and full-time status to retain the scholarship, which is renewable if all criteria are met.
